Go to a quiet place where you will not be disturbed – no tv, phones, children, barking dogs, snacks, washing dishes, etc – and be there a few minutes before the expected time

Do NOT use a cell phone, make sure you use a “land line”.  Cell phones often have interference and are difficult to hear on.  Also, the interviewer’s time is valuable (as is yours), but they want to feel as if you are taking this seriously too and even if you are sitting your living room, the picture that springs into their heads is of you driving down the road or walking through the shopping mall and their conversation interrupting you.

Dress professionally – you feel better when you know you look good

Keep a glass of water handy

Have some paper to take notes on, a pen, and a copy of your resume (It’s a good idea to have notes of your accomplishments you want to mention and some questions you want to ask already on your of paper.)

Stand up.  Your voice resonates clearer and this lets you wave your arms around and be more expressive (If you’re the type of person that “speaks” with your hands.)  Your voice is the only thing they have to go on, so use it.   Your excitement and energy really need to come through.

Make sure you know ahead of time what the next step is (another phone interview, a face-to-face interview, or an offer) and ask for it
