Why should I use a Recruiter ?

A good recruiter will have the Hiring Authority’s ear.  They have relationships with Human Resources and Technical Managers within the company.  Companies receive dozens of resumes every day.  Yours could easily be lost in the crowd.  Using a recruiter with a relationship will get your resume seen, which will increase your odds of getting an interview.

Also, a good recruiter will help you create a good resume and prepare you to give your best interview ever.  Remember, recruiters do this for a living; we see hundreds, if not thousands of resumes a year.  We get paid to have the best resumes and the best candidates to put into the best jobs at the best companies.

How do I pick a Recruiter ?

Carefully.   Don’t be afraid to ask questions – How long have you been a recruiter?  What’s your relationship with this company?  What is your philosophy on recruiting?  Do you belong to any professional organizations?  Are you certified?  Search their web site.  Ask friends for referrals.  You will be trusting this person with your career; make sure they deserve that trust.

You ideally want someone you feel comfortable talking to.   Someone you trust with some sensitive information about yourself and your family.  Time in the business and commitment to the industry, while not fool-proof, are at least a good place to start.  That commitment and dedication can be shown by belonging to such organizations as the National Association of Personnel Services.  Or state or local organizations such as Chambers of Commerce.  But the ultimate sign is if a recruiter is certified -  the Certified Personnel Consultant (CPC).  In order to even study for the exam, you have to have been a recruiter for at least 2 years.  The extensive test is on employment law, practices and ethics.  In order to keep the certification, the recruiter must also take at least 50 hours of continuing education every 3 years.

How long should my job search take ?

That depends on a lot of things – the market, your niche, your skill level, if you have to relocate, the company’s hiring process, and, of course, timing and a little luck.  It can vary a lot.   However, as a guide, you can plan on a few weeks for the job search, 1-2 weeks for the full interview process, your 2 week notice, and time to move if necessary.

What information should I include on my resume?

You need your name, contact information, accurate dates, job descriptions, any degrees and/or certifications earned, and a skill summary that includes only those skills you have used in a work environment.

What should I say when a Recruiter asks about my salary?

BE HONEST.  This is the best way for your recruiter to help you.  It’s usually best to separate out and give what you are currently making (along with any bonuses, stock options, etc) and what you are looking to make at your next position.  In order for your recruiter to help you, you must be honest.  If you are underpaid, give your real salary and say you think you are underpaid.  We are in the market everyday; we can tell you if you are or not.  An honest recruiter will tell you and not take advantage of you.  However, we are not miracle workers.  We know what the market will bear and you have to be willing to accept that that will go up and down from time to time.  There are many things to take into consideration besides salary – cost of living, quality of life, job satisfaction, career development opportunities, cities, schools, etc.

Should I post my resume on the Internet ?

That’s a personal decision.  If you do, you get more exposure and more phone calls; which can be good and bad.   Does your current company source off of the board you are putting your resume on?  The internet has become an indispensable tool for both job seekers and recruiters alike.  It’s a way for all of us to connect easier.

How much will it cost me to use a Recruiter?

It should cost you nothing.  Nowadays, companies pay the recruiter’s fee, not the candidate.

Do you place recent college graduates?

As a general rule, we place people with at least 3-5 years of full-time work experience, and often up to 20 or 30 years experience.  We specialize in mid- to senior-level technical and management positions.  However, on occasion, we may get a request for an exceptional recent graduate to fill an entry-level position.

Do you sponsor H1 visas or use sub-contractors?

As a general rule, no.  Since we specialize in full-time permanent and direct-hire placement, we ourselves do not sponsor.  Most of our clients also do not sponsor.  However, we will on occasion get a client that will sponsor H1 visas.

Do you accept referrals?

OF COURSE!  Referrals are the cornerstone of our business.  The vast majority of the people we have placed over the years have been referrals of other candidates we have spoken with, not necessarily successfully placed.  That’s the best thanks we can get from you – that you trust us enough to send your friends and co-workers to us to.
